Differentiated Spelling: Using Small Group Instruction

Spelling instruction is often overlooked by many teachers during reading and language arts. The purpose of this study was to implement a manageable differentiated word program, drawn from the Words Their Way (WTW) determine how it affected students’ spelling accuracy participants perceived its effect on daily journal writing time in fourth-grade self-contained classroom. Students were placed into small groups based their pre-test scores. Data collected through field notes, student teacher interviews, pre- post-test, survey. Qualitative data analyzed using constant comparative method, quantitative descriptive statistics. Four major themes emerged including benefits drawbacks WTW program’s impact writing, program helping improve accuracy. researcher also found that most showed growth post-assessment.
